Grinding Guide

Determining the right grind for your coffee is really fairly straight forward given the following guidelines.  Different brewing methods require different grind types. Breweing methods are truly a matter of personal preference, but choosing the right grind to match is a must.

The basic rule of thumb is to use a finer grind for faster brewing methods.  For example; if you are brewing your coffee using a press pot which will take several minutes, you would want to use a very coarse grind.  On the other hand, if you are brewing espresso which will extract in seconds, then you want to use a fine grind.

With that in mind, here are the available grinds we have for you to choose from:

Whole Bean

Un-ground, whole coffee bean that you grind yourself.

Infusion Grind (coarse)

This grind is recommended for use with press pots (French press), percolators, or vacuum brew systems.  Grinding coffee in this manner will result in very coarse particles similar to kosher salt.

Manual Drip Grind (medium-coarse)

This grind is recommended for use with manual pour-over systems and auto-drip machines when using a permanent gold filter (this medium-coarse grind results in less sediment when using a permanent filter).  Grinding coffee in this manner will result in medium sized particles similar in texture to coarse sand.

Auto-Drip Grind (medium fine)

This grind is recommended for use with automatic drip brewing systems when using paper filters.  Grinding coffee in this manner will result in medium-fine particles similar in texture to the grains of sand you might find at a beach.

Espresso Grind (fine)

This grind is recommended for use with all types of espresso systems.  Grinding coffee in this manner will result in fine particles similar in texture to confectioner’s sugar.  This fine grind is important for the proper compression of the coffee require for extracting your espresso shot.

Turkish Grind (very fine)

This grind is recommended for use when making Turkish style coffee.  Grinding coffee in this manner will result in very fine particles similar in texture to baking flour.  This very fine grind is important when dissolving the coffee is required.
