A: Hi Joe – Great question!
The short answer is – The “honey processed” coffees will pose no issues for grinding and is safe to use in automatic machines.
The longer answer:
The processing terms honey, pulped natural, and semi-washed, are commonly used interchangeably, although there are minor differences in each process.
Basically it refers to the process of removing the outer pulp (skin/husk) of the coffee cherry leaving the sticky mucilage still on the parchment of the coffee beans.
Then, rather than washing the coffee, the coffee is dried with the mucilage on.
This imparts a natural sweetness, increased complexity, and perhaps fruity tones to the profile.
The “honey” process is all about flavor and profiling, and in no way uses actual honey or additional sweeteners or additives.
Your MFG is quite correct regarding the use of “flavored” coffee in automatic machines.
All the Best,
Joe
