Guatemala Antigua - Finca Medina
Premium Antigua, Rainforest Alliance, Fully Washed
Sweet, Great Body, Milk Chocolate, Toffee
Nestled among three volcanoes, Acatenango Fuego, and Agua, the city of Antigua was once the capital of the Spanish Empire in Central America, but it's now known for stunning
colonial architecture and the nearby farms that produce some of the region's highest-quality coffee.
We are happy to present you one of the finest Genuine Antigua coffees we have come across in a while; Guatemala Antigua - Finca Medina.
The coffee is grown under a canopy of grevillea trees and native shade trees called chalum (ingas).
It is also graded as Strictly Hard Bean (SHB), meaning it is grown at an altitude of over 5,000 ft. (See below for more about SHB coffee).
Finca Medina: Guatemalan coffee at its best!
General Flavor Observations
Guatemala Antigua - Finca Medina
This Guatemalan Antigua offers an incredibly smooth, sweet cup with plenty of milk chocolate.
The mouth-feel is round and silky, and gives way to a clean, bright finish with accents of citrus.
The body is well defined, and will present itself as medium to full, depending on the roast level.
No matter which roast level you choose, this wonderful Guatemala Antigua is sure to provide plenty of flavor and
character, in a full, round, satisfying cup.
Roast Level Profile Notes
Guatemala Antigua - Finca Medina
I recommend our Full City Roast for this coffee to appreciate all of the nuances and characteristics in the profile.
However, it does extremely well across all of our Roast Levels.
We are always happy to accommodate any roast level you prefer.
The notes below illustrate how the various roast levels will change the flavor profile:
City Roast (light roast)
If you are looking for a brighter, more citrusy cup, then choose this roast.
Notes of graham cracker, plum and a nice nuttiness in the cup are perfectly matched by a crisp, lime acidity, balanced with notes of cocoa nibs and caramel sweetness.
This is a great choice for those who prefer a lighter roast.
Full City Roast (medium roast) - Preferred
This is the roast level to experience all the complexities between a light and dark roast.
A full, round body, milk chocolate, sweet brown sugar, raisin, and a smooth, buttery mouth-feel.
The finish is softly crisp with accents of orange and lime. Fantastic!
Full City (+) Roast
This is the roast level where you pick up more prominent notes of chocolate and
juiciness.
The mouth-feel is velvety and rich, the body is weightier, and notes of toffee sweetly roll through the cup. The finish is long with a tempered acidity.
Vienna Roast
Vienna Roast will provide a more focused flavor profile that is centered around
bittersweet chocolate and a deep, rich body.
A caramelized sweetness is present, with a more pointed and lingering finish akin to molasses. Lovely!
French Roast
This coffee can handle it!
If you love deep, full-bodied French Roast coffees that retain complexity, you won't be disappointed!
Additional Information
Guatemala Antigua - Finca Medina
Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) coffees are particularly sought after because these extreme elevations cause a
slower development of the coffee while nutrient concentrations in the soil impart a much higher quality in terms of
flavor.
These higher elevations also mean the crop yield is lower, and it is more labor-intensive to grow, harvest, and
transport the coffee. However, the prices garnered for these SHB coffees are due to the coffee's outstanding quality,
and not its production.
Located in the village of San Lorenzo El Cubo, in the region of Ciudad Vieja, Finca Medina includes two estates, one
named after the organization itself and the other called Anexo Portal.
At both farms, the staff implements some of the most modern processing technology in Latin America, contributing to each
coffee's consistency and quality.
Finca Medina has been a member of the Antigua Coffee Producers Association since 2000, with a focus on
producing Rainforest Alliance-certified coffees.
