Papua New Guinea - Neama
Limited Offering, Shade Grown, Washed
Velvety body, Tropical Fruit, Chocolate
This is a limited specialty lot from small-holder farmers in the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
This wonderfully complex coffee is grown by individuals with an average farm size of less than 2 acres and an average production of 10 bags per year.
Due to nearly nonexistent roads and the extremely remote locations of the communities, these producers pulp, ferment, wash and dry their own coffee, selling only in small volumes.
It is amazing how this wonderful coffee can make it from these farmers to our cups.
A truly exceptional and special offering!
General Flavor Observations
Papua New Guinea - Neama
The inviting aroma offers mild nuttiness and soft floral notes.
In the cup, the body is medium with a velvety mouth-feel.
The sweet, tropical fruit notes range from mango to pear, with hints of green apple or stone fruit depending on the roast level.
A base of nutty, chocolate surrounds the profile, which finishes with a lingering yet mild acidity.
The overall profile is complex, yet balanced, and very satisfying.
Roast Level Profile Notes
Papua New Guinea - Neama
I found the
Full City roast to be my favorite, with a Full City (+) roast coming a close second.
Full City is my usual 'go to' roast for PNG because it almost always provides for the best overall balance and focuses the profile.
Full City (+) will provide a bigger body and silky mouth-feel.
Whichever Roast level you choose, this is a delicious coffee.
We are always happy to accommodate any roast level you prefer.
The notes below illustrate how changing the roast level will alter the profile:
City Roast (light roast)
With this roast level, you will find a milder body and a bit more spice and complexity.
Notes of cocoa nibs, nuts, malic fruit tones, and herbal qualities are prominent.
If you want to experience pure Origin Characteristics, then this is the choice.
Full City Roast (medium roast) - Preferred
The Full City roast level is great for this coffee; velvety mouth-feel, good depth, and fruit.
The body is medium to full, with a nice complexity; nutty, chocolate, and nice caramel sweetness.
This roast will provide a delicious and wonderful cup.
Full City (+) Roast
With this roast level, the body will deepen and the mouth-feel will become more silky. The sweetness will shift more to that of stone fruit, and the acidity will decrease.
A dark chocolate base will become more pronounced, the nuttiness, sweetness, and complexity remain.
This is a really nice roast level for those who enjoy darker roasted Indonesian coffees.
Vienna Roast
Vienna Roast may be starting to push beyond what the coffee can offer, as it may eclipse much of the complexity.
Papua New Guinea coffees are not as heavy and bold as some other Indonesian coffees.
In any case, what you will find here is a heavier body with prominent notes of dark chocolate
throughout and a pointed finish that tapers quickly into dark berries.
French Roast
Not recommended.
