Yemen Mocca - Khulani
Traceable, High-Quality Heirloom, Traditional Natural

This is a rare and outstanding Yemen offering that is Traceable to small legacy farmers in the high mountains of Yemen’s northwestern ?a?dah Governorate, who together comprise a grower coalition called the Khulani Coffee Society for Agricultural Development (KCSAD).
Coffee-growing families in this part of Yemen, like many others across the country, tend parcels of terraced land passed through many generations.
“Khulani” is a term of terroir distinction similar to “Kona,” that refers to high-quality “heirloom” coffee varieties produced in Yemen’s northern ranges.
Widely regarded as one of Yemen's best coffees. all Khulani coffee is processed as a natural: hand-picked, sorted for consistency, and dried in a single layer in full sun on raised beds or rooftops.
General Flavor Observations
Yemen Mocca - Khulani
This rare coffee is sweet, with notes of raspberry, chocolate, and a complex profile that is both comforting and creamy in texture.
The aromatics offer hints of floral, cinnamon, and spice while grinding and brewing.
This Yemen is sweet, comforting, and surprisingly delicate.
While the body is thick and creamy, and the profile notes are headlined with chocolate and vanilla, there is a host of other subtle flavors that create a wonderful complexity.
On the floral side, it tends towards rose and orange; in the cup you will discover hints of a raspberry and blueberry juiciness, depending on the roast level.
Throughout, it remains chocolatey, malty, pleasantly astringent, and distinctly tasty.
A rare treat not to be missed!
Roast Level Profile Notes
Yemen Mocca - Khulani
I love the rich, complexity of Yemen coffees, and found a
Full City roast works best to balance all of the wonderful qualities this coffee has to offer.
We are always happy to accommodate any roast level you prefer.
The notes below illustrate how the various Roast Levels will alter the profile.
City Roast (light roast)
If you are familiar with coffees from Yemen and seek to maximize the full range of complexity the coffee can offer, then this is the right roast to choose from.
You will find a complex mix of eastern spices, cocoa, figs, brazil nut, raspberry and orange. A distinct crispness on the finish is offset by a round, sweet mouthfeel.
Our Yemen Mocca Khulani is absolutely wonderful in this light roast.
Full City Roast (medium roast) - Preferred
This roast level will provide a well-balanced and yet complex experience.
A sweet and creamy mouth-feel, surrounded by chocolate, with hints of raspberry and subtle hints of rose.
The body is full and round, perfectly balanced with a acidity. The finish is smooth with lingering spice and notes of blueberry as the cup cools. Wonderful!
Full City (+) Roast
This roast level will offer you increased depth and a juicier mouth-feel.
The fruit tends toward a blueberry or perhaps a raisin-like tone.
Notes of darker chocolate, and walnut emerge, which compliment the sweetness and spice.
The finish will be long and smooth, with a nice brightness. Again, the fruit tones tend to develop as the cups cools.
Vienna Roast
This roast level has that solid dark roast quality, yet remains very smooth.
The body and mouth-feel will seem heavier with abundant notes of dark chocolates. The finish is long and pointed.
While some fruit tones may remain, they will be noticeably muted.
French Roast
This roast level is pushing the value point as it will nearly eclipse the
characteristics of this fine Yemen Mocca Khulani. In all honesty, I cannot recommend a French roast.
Additional Information
Yemen Mocca - Khulani
Produced by the Khulani Coffee Society for Agricultural Development (KCSAD). KCSAD brings together farmers from across the ?a?dah districts of Saqayn, Haydan, Ghamr, Razih, Monabbih, and Majz.
The core aim of KCSAD is to inspire more ambitious farm investments and quality standards in harvest and post-harvest alike.
The farmers meet regularly, where they devise outreach campaigns to teach cultivation techniques and emphasize the economic potential of a well-run farm. Centralized aid has also been made available for select families in need.
Yemen is the oldest territory on Earth to cultivate coffee commercially.
Its seed stock, originally transported as wild arabica landraces in Ethiopia, was used to create the world’s first ever coffee farms where coffee would be grown commercially for trade across the Arabian peninsula and eventually mainland Europe.
The word Arabica itself referred to the Arabian coffee supply that was the West’s first in history.
